Jamie Carragher has pointed out that two of Manchester United’s most prominent figures cannot play together under Rúben Amorim.

With Rúben Amorim set to take charge of Manchester United’s first-team following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal, there’s much to consider.

Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s vision for the Old Trafford club is beginning to take shape around ten months after his acquisition, and many anticipate that Amorim will overhaul the squad Ten Hag built over the last two and a half seasons at United.

Throughout the remainder of the season, Amorim is expected to carefully assess the squad, deciding which players align with his plans and which may be deemed surplus to requirements.

While speculation mounts over which players the 39-year-old manager might retain, sell, or bring in over the next few transfer windows, much attention remains on how United’s squad will adapt to Amorim’s renowned three-at-the-back system.

Two stars can’t start together

Speaking on Monday evening, former Liverpool centre-back Jamie Carragher took a deep dive into who Amorim could favour at United during his opening months as the club’s new head coach.

Starting with the defence, Carragher explained that although the back three may suit Lisandro Martínez due to his brilliant left foot, Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt will not be able to play together due.

“I actually think Martínez in this position, I’ve mentioned this before, it might suit him [as he] gives you that balance with a left foot,” Carragher started.

“I can’t see De Ligt or Maguire being in the wide positions; they can’t. They will not be able to cope. So, I don’t think De Ligt or Maguire could play in the same back three, because whoever was in the wide position will get really exposed.”

It has been theorised that both centre-backs will be able to play their best football in the middle of a back three, and so, therefore, only one of those players can occupy this position.

Yoro is a project

Further, Carragher explained that he feels Yoro could be a great addition to Amorim’s defence, playing as the right centre-back alongside De Ligt and Martínez.

“Now, Yoro, coming in as a young player, he’s a project for the club,” Carragher said.

“You’d want to work with him, get him in, young player, probably can deal with maybe the pace down the sides of it as well.

“So, but they’ve got the numbers if there’s injuries or suspensions, we know they’ve got that.”
