“It’s not true…” – Bundesliga expert provides huge boost for Ruben Amorim’s favourite Manchester United target

Manchester United will not be eyeing any of Sporting Lisbon’s players for January transfers despite Ruben Amorim’s relationship with them.

When it was announced that Ruben Amorim would take charge at Manchester United, many thought that he would want to sign one or two stars from Sporting Lisbon.

Considering the Portuguese boss plays a very specific style and formation, it seemed to make sense to get players suited to the system.

Viktor Gyökeres quickly became a rumoured option for the Reds in the January transfer window, alongside several other players, but Amorim quickly shut down the rumours.

“Not in January, that’s what I said,” he responded when asked about signing Sporting players at Old Trafford.

“I don’t know about the summer. The first thing is to hold out until the summer [laughs]. The Sporting players are very good players. We’ll see.”

United could very well move for the likes of Gyökeres in the summer, but that does give other clubs the opportunity to snatch these targets during the mid-season window.

The Swedish striker is being tracked by some of the biggest clubs in Europe due to his goalscoring form in Portugal. He has scored 31 goals in 29 appearances so far this term.

Bayern Munich were reportedly open to making a move for the 26-year-old in January, but that has since been disputed by Bundesliga expert Christian Falk, who says that Vincent Kompany’s side will make no move this month.

“It’s not true that Bayern will compete with Manchester United for Viktor Gyökeres’ signature this winter,” Falk told CaughtOffside.

“We first reported on the record Bundesliga champions’ interest back in November.

“Nonetheless, it’s now understood that Bayern aren’t prepared to commit to a transfer of this magnitude in the winter window. Though, Gyökeres will remain a topic for the summer.”

United have advantage in Gyökeres summer race

Of course, United will still have competition should they decide to move for Gyökeres in the summer, but they have the lure of Amorim, who helped turn the Swede into a goalscoring machine in Sporting.

Gyökeres had a great relationship with Amorim and was upset to learn that he would be leaving the Portuguese club last November.

“It’s very sad that he’s leaving, but of course we understand his decision,” the 26-year-old told reporters shortly after the decision.

“He has of course meant a lot [to me] considering that he gave me that chance and that he made me develop so much.”

Asked about speculation of following Amorim to Manchester, Gyökeres added: “He probably has some strikers there already, so we’ll see.

“No, he hasn’t [contacted me]. It’s fun but nothing I attach any importance to because it’s talk and nothing concrete.”

Amorim has since essentially confirmed that he does not see Joshua Zirkzee as a natural striker, leaving a clear space for a new no.9 to be signed.

It seems like finances could be the only stumbling block for a potential move.
