“It’s no secret…” – Manchester United and Liverpool named amongst clubs interested in Champions League star

Manchester United have been named amongst several clubs interested in a Champions League defender in a deal that would cost over £60 million.

Rúben Amorim is looking to take Manchester United back to the top of the Premier League as soon as he can, but the start of the season won’t have given him much hope if he was looking for a quick fix.

United need to improve across the entire pitch. Scoring goals and keeping them out have been as big an issue as each other at the start of this campaign.

Benjamin Šeško appears to have come across the same issues as Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee: the United striker struggles to get enough regular service to be a serious goal threat.

While there are problems up front, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha have taken the pressure away from Šeško, making the defensive issues more important to solve.

Senne Lammens signed for United on Deadline Day, but Altay Bayindir has remained in goal for the time being. But Amorim may look to improve his back three, rather than look for another shotstopper.

United named as side eyeing Bremer

While United have many centre-back options, Amorim appears to be hungry for another central defensive option after his side’s poor start to the season.

Calcio Mercato have named United as one of the clubs interested in Juventus’ Gleison Bremer should he become available in the future, stating: “It’s not secret that the Premier League big clubs are partial
to the player, especially Manchester United and Liverpool.” Bayern Munich are also interested.

Bremer only extended his contract last season and is currently considered “unsellable” by the Juventus management, but an offer worth over £60 million could tempt the Old Lady into selling the defender, who started in the club’s 4-4 draw against Borussia Dortmund last week.

United’s 3-4-2-1 system requires their defenders to step up into midfield and close down attackers, meaning they cover more ground than most other centre-backs, and Bremer may not be the best option in that case.

The 27-year-old recently spent 10 months on the sideline with an ACL injury and has been subject to several muscle issues in the past, according to Transfermarkt. Playing in a high-energy system like Amorim’s could aggravate old injuries and make a return to his old form difficult.

United should trust in de Ligt and Yoro

Bremer – as a right footer – would compete for the right-sided position or the more central role. However, Noussair Mazraoui and Leny Yoro currently occupy those positions, with Matthijs de Ligt also filling in when needed.

While it could be argued that the two starting right-footed centre-backs should switch positions, they have both been exceptional under Amorim and deserve to continue as the starters.

Noussair Mazraoui has also been impressive when playing in central defence, meaning another right-footed centre-back simply isn’t needed at Old Trafford.

Luke Shaw has also been solid on the left side, with Ayden Heaven waiting in the wings and Lisandro Martínez close to a return from injury.
