INEOS’ Erik ten Hag decision questioned by Man United hero, expresses his surprise
INEOS’ decision to keep Erik ten Hag as Manchester United manager from this summer onwards has been questioned by a hero of Old Trafford.
Erik ten Hag will stay on as Manchester United’s manager for the upcoming season, following a decision by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sir Dave Brailsford to continue with the Dutchman at Old Trafford.
In the last six months, there has been significant speculation about whether Ten Hag is the right fit to lead United into the new INEOS-led era. However, after three weeks of consideration following an FA Cup final win over Manchester City, the club’s leadership concluded that retaining Ten Hag was the best move.
The club had considered other candidates, including Gareth Southgate and Thomas Tuchel, but once it became clear that these alternatives were unavailable, the decision to keep Ten Hag was solidified.
Although the decision has not yet been officially announced, major media outlets have confirmed it. The FA Cup final victory and strong fan support were key factors in the decision.
Former United player and 1999 Champions League hero Teddy Sheringham has expressed his surprise with the announcement, explaining that his team did not have the consistency that United always expect.
“I’m quite surprised with the decision to keep Erik ten Hag, to be honest,” Sheringham told TG Casino.
“It could have gone either way, but Ten Hag had a really poor season in the Premier League – losing 14 games – and didn’t have the consistency that Manchester United really look for and expect.
“At the end of the day, though, he’s won the FA Cup in brilliant fashion by beating Manchester City in the final – it couldn’t have been any harder on paper.
“It could have gone either way – they could have easily said that their Premier League form wasn’t good enough. I reckon they were flipping a coin of whether to let him go or not, and they’ve decided to carry on.”
