Wayne Rooney has said that he believes Manchester United have made one of the best signings of the summer, as new man could start against Arsenal.
Manchester United’s summer transfer window has been very impressive, considering that the club missed out on winning the Europa League last season and only finished 15th in the Premier League.
Several exciting young players have joined the academy sides, with Enzo Kana-Biyik going immediately on loan to INEOS sister club Laussane-Sport. While Diego Leon has joined Rúben Amorim’s first-team squad, providing competition for Patrick Dorgu.
Jason Wilcox, United’s new Director of Football, has also made several important additions to the senior side, focusing on the attacking areas after the struggles in front of goal last season.
Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo join the club, and look set to start the season as Amorim’s two attacking midfielders behind the centre forward, meaning Bruno Fernandes will drop back into the double pivot.
Benjamin Šeško has been signed to lead the line for Amorim, meaning Rasmus Hojlund could be loaned out or even sold, but the Slovenian was only announced before the Fiorentina fixture last weekend, meaning he has only trained with the squad for a week.
Rooney praises Šeško as an exciting transfer
Speaking on his new BBC Show ahead of the Premier League opening weekend, Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney spoke on the new transfers, naming Šeško as one of the most exciting new additions.
“There’s been some big money signings. Who do you think has got the best deal so far? Do you know what? I really like Šeško. I think he’s going to be top,” said the former United No.10.
“I do. I like him, I think, because all his attributes. He’s big, he can head the ball, he’s strong, he’s quick, he can use both feet.
“But going into Manchester United is different than going anywhere and there’s a big pressure.” Rooney speaks as a man who has watched many great players fail to deliver at Old Trafford, especially after Sir Alex Ferguson left the club.
Šeško looks set to make his United debut against Arsenal this weekend, and could even start the game, as revealed by Amorim in his pre-match press conference on Friday.
Šeško needs to be given time at Old Trafford
United have signed so many players in recent years that made the fan base excited, but so many have failed to deliver because of the pressure cooker that is Old Trafford. The Red Devils are unlike any other club in England when it comes to pressure on the players.
Many thought Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee would be United’s striking duo for years to come when the Dutchman scored on his debut to seal a 1-0 victory for Erik ten Hag’s side on the opening day of last season, but both could struggle for minutes this season.
With Hojlund now being pushed out the door, and Zirkzee set for minutes on the bench, Šeško needs to be given time to learn the ropes of being a centre forward for United; the lack of European football could be a good thing for the Slovenian this season.
Cunha and Mbeumo should be able to take the goal-scoring burden away from the centre forward if Šeško is struggling, as both players showed they can score on a regular basis in the Premier League last season.
