Fabrizio Romano has delivered a fresh transfer update on Manchester United target Rayan Cherki after the player announced he will leave Lyon this summer
Manchester United are looking to bolster their attacking options in the upcoming summer transfer window following a season marked by struggles in front of goal.
The club is targeting players with Premier League experience, with Matheus Cunha and Liam Delap among those on their radar.
At the same time, Ruben Amorim’s squad will also need to pursue more cost-effective additions, and Lyon’s Rayan Cherki has emerged as a strong candidate. The talented attacker is expected to be available for around £20 million.
Cherki caught the eye during Lyon’s Europa League clash with United, scoring twice over the two legs despite his side ultimately being eliminated in dramatic fashion.
The French youngster has ended the campaign with 12 goals and 20 assists in all competitions and looks like he could be a great signing for many clubs.
Fabrizio Romano delivers Cherki transfer update
After the final game of the season, Cherki confirmed that he will be leaving Lyon this summer and that has put clubs on red alert.
Recent reports have claimed that United have been contacted by the 21-year-old’s representatives, with their interest in the player well-known. They tried to sign him several years ago before his breakthrough in the professional game.
Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that he ‘expects’ teams in the Premier League to be in the race for the exciting starlet and also states that Paris Saint-Germain are not currently involved in the running.
“For this summer, I expect English clubs to return for Rayan Cherki because the interest is strong,” the Italian journalist confirmed on his YouTube channel. “Let’s also see Borussia Dortmund decide to do for the player because they want to add some quality and creativity.
“I expect clubs to return for Rayan Cherki but something I want to clarify is on Paris Saint-Germain – we had many rumours on PSG and Rayan Cherki. At the moment, with the current situation, PSG are not interested in advancing on a deal for Rayan Cherki, the situation is very quiet.
“The expectation is for Rayan Cherki to look for options outside of France to see some new opportunity around Europe.”
United have to consider Cherki move for two reasons
United are likely to be one of the clubs Romano is referring to and they should be in for Cherki in the upcoming transfer window.
There are two glaring reasons why the Reds must be looking at the attacking talent, with the first being that he fits the exact mould of signing that Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s new regime are looking for.
He is young, talented and extremely cheap considering the current market. Despite being just 21 years of age, Cherki already has a wealth of top level experience and quality which United could certainly do with.

Secondly, as mentioned beforehand, the Frenchman will only cost around £20 million, which could be important for United, who do not have an unlimited budget this summer.
United have a lot of areas they need to improve on this summer and securing a solid signing for such an amount will leave the decision-makers extra cash to use elsewhere, which cannot be understated for the club in this current moment.
