Ruben Amorim had a smirk on his face when asked about the disallowed Manchester United penalty against Real Sociedad on Thursday evening.

Manchester United advanced to the Europa League quarter-finals with a convincing 4-1 victory over Real Sociedad in the second leg of their round-of-16 clash.

Sociedad struck first with an early penalty converted by Mikel Oyarzabal, but United quickly responded as Rasmus Højlund won a spot-kick, which Bruno Fernandes confidently dispatched.

Fernandes doubled his tally in the second half with another penalty after Patrick Dorgu was brought down, before completing his hat-trick with a stunning finish.

Diogo Dalot sealed the emphatic win with a late goal, capping off a dominant performance from Ruben Amorim’s side.

Amorim laughs at Dorgu’s penalty honesty

United may have scored another goal from the spot, which could have made Fernandes the first player in over 70 years to score a hat-trick of penalties for the club.

However, VAR intervened when Dorgu was brought down in the box once again while United were 3-1 up and the penalty was chalked off.

One surprising thing noticed on the TV cameras afterwards was the fact that Dorgu actually went up to the referee afterwards to admit that it wasn’t a foul.

In his post-match press conference, Amorim laughed when asked what he thought of Dorgu’s honesty with the officials.

“It depends,” he smiled. “It’s the right thing to do, so I’m quite proud of him. But it depends, I cannot say if it is 0-0 or if we are losing that I have the same response.

“He did well, a great performance and improving during the game. In that position, he has the physicality and he’s clearly able to play in our league.

“It was a good game and a good action from Dorgu.”

Amorim’s team looks different with attacking wingbacks

United fans have seen enough games where the wingbacks have led to Amorim’s team playing very poorly. Too defensive and pinned back.

Recently, especially when Dorgu has played, it feels like things can click so much more when those two players are operating as attackers.

Even on Thursday, it was noticeable that Diogo Dalot was playing more aggressively, with Noussair Mazraoui behind him. This is how United can pin teams back and dominate games themselves.

There is still a lot of work to be done, but it is clear that these two positions can take United to a much better level if they have the right players there.
