Harry Maguire waxes lyrical about Manchester United starlet, he can become “elite”
Harry Maguire has become an important player for Manchester United again under the management of Ruben Amorim.
Manchester United secured five senior signings in the latest summer transfer window and several of those have been important players this season.
Leny Yoro signed for the club in a surprise deal after United beat Real Madrid to the signature of the teenage defender.
It was a major coup for the Reds but Yoro’s season started in a difficult fashion after he suffered injury in pre-season.
The first few months of the season were filled with hard work in the gym and behind the scenes to get back to full fitness under Ruben Amorim.
Yoro has now made 13 appearances for the club, with six of those games being starts. The Frenchman is getting up to speed and beginning to show his quality.
That hasn’t come without difficulties, however, with the Southampton game standing out as a big lesson for the defender who struggled against Kamaldeen Sulemana on the wing.
Maguire believes Yoro can become an “elite” defender
Harry Maguire has been impressed by the qualities of Yoro, as well as fellow defensive signing Matthijs de Ligt.
“They’re really good players,” the English defender told club media. “They’re top players, otherwise they wouldn’t be playing for this club.”
The 31-year-old believes Yoro has the tools to become an “elite” defender, but also explains that he needs help during a tough period for the club.
It is never easy for young players to be involved in difficult moments for clubs but Maguire states that this can be an important “learning curve” for the teenager in his development.
“Obviously, Leny is a young boy with all the attributes to go on to be an elite centre-back,” continued Maguire. “He has everything that you want in a modern-day centre-back at the moment.
“He needs guiding through. Obviously, this is a tough, tough period for the club. But it would be a great learning curve for him and he’ll learn a lot from it. And I have no doubts he’s going to go on and have a great career for this club.”
Yoro has impressed overall this season
Barring that game against the Saints, the 19-year-old has had a solid impact for the team this season so far.
Yoro has come into difficult games like against Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal. He held his own in all of those experiences.

He also looks much more comfortable on the ball than initially expected, which is helpful considering the way Amorim wants to play.
There is still a lot of football left to play this season and it will be important for Yoro to get as much as possible ahead of a full season next term where the aims will be higher.
