Alejandro Garnacho ‘wants’ Real Madrid or Barcelona move, Manchester United legend claims
According to a former Manchester United legend and employee, Alejandro Garnacho may want to move to Real Madrid or Barcelona in the future.
Alejandro Garnacho was one of the scorers as Manchester United claimed a 3-0 win over Leicester City in Ruud van Nistelrooy’s final match as interim boss before Rúben Amorim’s arrival.
Despite starting the previous three games, Garnacho was benched for this Premier League clash but came on in the second half, replacing Marcus Rashford.

The young winger had recently come under fire, even facing a confrontation with a fan before a match earlier in the week. But he answered his critics with a stunning curling strike that helped United secure the victory.
However, much was made of Garnacho’s muted reaction after scoring, with captain Bruno Fernandes explaining it was likely a response to the recent criticism he’s faced from supporters.
International break reaction
As always, with the international break, the most recent events often become drawn out and overanalysed, as is seemingly happening with Garnacho.
Just a few days after Roy Keane blasted the 20-year-old for not celebrating his goal against Leicester, United legend and former midfielder Nicky Butt has claimed that Garnacho will be eyeing a move to Real Madrid or Barcelona in the future.
“If you look at all the superstars, they never stay in the Premier League,” Butt began on the Football’s Greatest podcast.
Butt also worked at United as Director of First Team Development between 2020 and 2021, when Garnacho was rising to prominence within the club’s Academy.
“They stay until they need to go to the next level. A lot of the players see the next level as being Real Madrid or Barca, but we don’t see anywhere bigger than Man United. Our mentality is if you leave Man United, you’re going down.
“You don’t get appreciated here like you do at Madrid. You can guarantee Kylian Mbappe will be in the running for the Ballon d’Or next year because he’s at Real Madrid. It’s like Garnacho – he’s doing well here now. He’s a young Argentinian boy.
“If he keeps going, you can imagine him wanting to go to Real Madrid or Barcelona. Players become superstars there, not only on the football pitch.”
However, with Rúben Amorim arriving at United and set to take charge for the first time on Sunday, 24 November, Garnacho will be competing under a new head coach and regime within United’s squad.
Considering the Portuguese coach’s enthusiasm for using young players, Garnacho may not have to leave Old Trafford to become the loved figure Butt speaks about.
