“The saddest thing…” Ian Wright fumes at Roy Keane following Alejandro Garnacho comments
Ian Wright has fumed at former Manchester United captain Roy Keane following his comments surrounding Alejandro Garnacho’s goal against Leicester City.
Alejandro Garnacho was one of three goalscorers as Manchester United defeated Leicester City in Ruud van Nistelrooy‘s final game as interim manager before Rúben Amorim‘s arrival.
After starting the three games prior, Garnacho found himself on the bench for the Premier League encounter but was handed his chance in the second half as he replaced Marcus Rashford.
Garnacho had been criticised recently, with a fan hassling the player before a game earlier in the week. He replied against Leicester, scoring a fantastic curling effort to hand United a 3-0 victory on Sunday.
However, many comments were made about Garnacho’s decision not to celebrate after the goal, with club captain Bruno Fernandes claiming that this was due to the stick he’s had from fans lately.
Keane’s Garnacho comments
Speaking on the latest episode of Stick to Football, former United captain Roy Keane fumed at Garnacho’s decision not to celebrate, claiming that criticism should never affect feelings when a goal is scored.
Keane further explained that when you score a goal such as Garnacho’s, which he described as “brilliant”, nothing else should be in your head beyond the fact that you’ve achieved the sole objective of the sport – to score.
Keane admitted that a player is allowed to be angry at comments made surrounding him and that he’s allowed to make his point on social media, but for the fans who have travelled and paid to watch, Garnacho should be celebrating his effort.
He further claimed that if Garnacho can’t enjoy it, he should “get a job somewhere else,” such as a factory.
Wright hits back
Ian Wright, the former Arsenal striker, hit back at Keane’s comments, fuming that the former midfielder would disregard the fact that Garnacho is still a young player and learning his craft.
“For a 20-year-old… he’s still going through the journey of what he’s doing, you know what I mean?” Wright explained.
“That affected him to the point where he didn’t celebrate. the thing is, that’s how much it affected him. he scored a great goal, but he’s worried about that, and he’s a young player!”
He continued: I haven’t got a problem with disagreeing. I’m trying to put it into, from Garnacho’s point of view, it affected him so much. It did affect the fact that he didn’t celebrate.
“I know for a fact that it’s the saddest thing in the world when someone scores and they don’t celebrate because of something that’s happened.”
Finally, Wright concluded by explaining that this is an experience Garnacho can learn from as a young player aged 20.
