Manchester United loanee Harry Amass doesn’t know where he will be playing for the second half of the season; it will be decided soon.
At the beginning of the summer, Rúben Amorim made the decision to loan out Harry Amass for the 2025/26 season and keep Diego Leon after his transfer from Paraguay. Amass made seven appearances for Manchester United last campaign, but was loaned to Championship side Sheffield Wednesday on Deadline Day.
Despite scoring an own goal on his debut for Henrik Pedersen’s side, Amass has been brilliant since his summer switch. The former Watford youngster scored his first professional goal on Saturday, with an excellent finish from outside of the box against Southampton.
Amass was one of a few new additions for Sheffield Wednesday, as the Owls were under transfer restrictions due to their poor financial situation. United uniquely initially agreed to a six-month loan for Amass, where they would cover all expenses to make the deal happen, rather than for the full season.
Therefore, as it stands, Amass will be set to return to Old Trafford in January, but a new update on his future has now been revealed, after his first goal for Wednesday.
Pedersen reveals talks have been held
Loaning players to a club in a difficult financial situation is never an easy decision, as the youngsters can feel left out of the team environment, as everyone else fights together to keep the club alive.
However, Amass appears to be a well-valued member of the Wednesday squad, and Henrik Pedersen seems to want to keep him for the second half of the season.
Speaking to The Star, Pedersen said: “I spoke with Kevin [Beadell, recruitment manager]. Today we have been in Manchester to have a meeting with them about this situation for the future.
“I think we should have this back in the next two or three weeks when we speak about the development from Harry and what it could look like after Christmas.”
While the situation isn’t yet resolved, it appears that Amass will remain in Sheffield until the end of the campaign, before returning to Old Trafford for the start of next season.
Amass to compete with Dorgu next year
Leon’s transfer seemed to put the writing on the wall for Amass, despite his impressive cameos last season. But, he could return to United next season, with a chance to compete with Patrick Dorgu, while Leon could be loaned out.
Despite his impressive performance against Tottenham Hotspur, Dorgu has struggled this season and often found himself behind Diogo Dalot on the left-hand side. He must improve soon if he wants a guaranteed spot in the side next season.
Amass’ full season of Championship football could see him return to Old Trafford with a better physical profile to go with his already impressive technical ability. Playing for Sheffield Wednesday could also help improve his defensive skills, which were a weakness of his game before the Championship loan.
If Amass can displace Dorgu next season, the young Dane may fall subject to the new two-year rule at Old Trafford, where stars are let go after two years if they can’t live up to their expectations.
