Gareth Southgate ‘OUT’ of Manchester United running as Marcus Rashford told what to do
Gareth Southgate is reportedly no longer in the running for the Manchester United job, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe yet to decide on Erik ten Hag.
Erik ten Hag‘s position at Manchester United remains uncertain, with the club yet to decide on his future beyond this summer. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS team are carrying out a “season review” of the Dutchman’s tenure, and a decision has not yet been reached.
As part of this review, potential successors are being considered if Ten Hag were to depart. Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino, Roberto de Zerbi, and Gareth Southgate are some of the names frequently mentioned as viable candidates.
However, with Tuchel ruling himself out of candidacy over the weekend, it has now been revealed that Southgate is also no longer in the running for the position.
According to The Mirror, United were initially keen on Southgate, but they have moved on as the timing does not work. Southgate would not be available until as late as mid-July, meaning he is now out of the running for the job this summer.
Meanwhile, former Chelsea and England left-back Wayne Bridge has been speaking about Marcus Rashford’s situation at United following a below-par season riddled with inconsistency across the whole squad.
Asked whether he believes Rashford needs to leave United to return to his best, Bridge explained that he would not suggest such an option to Rashford.
“I don’t really know where his head’s at. I’m very big on the mental side of the game, and I don’t know if his head’s gone a bit or there’s a problem with his attitude,” Bridge told BetFred.
“He possibly needs someone to put an arm around him and give him a talking to. I don’t know all the details, but I wouldn’t suggest that he needs to get out of Manchester United yet. That could be a question that gets answered this summer, but he’s obviously got a lot of ability.”
Bridge was further asked if a change of club could give Rashford a new “mental freshness” as a footballer.
“There’s a lot of things that can. The manager can, even if it’s the same manager, because I had a bad time under José Mourinho, but I was able to turn the corner with him, and it proves that you can always turn things around.
“A break and then starting the new season fresh can also help. I don’t think that jumping ship is necessarily the answer. I just believe that he needs to get his head down over the summer and have a good preseason and see how the start of the season goes for him.”
