Manchester United lost against Burnley in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Carrington on Wednesday.

Erik ten Hag’s men did not have a Premier League fixture last weekend as part of the competitions’ winter break, and the club, therefore, organised a friendly fixture.

Manchester United have been keen to play friendly games where possible this season and have played several in the opening weeks of the season, with some pointing towards them as a reason for the injury crisis.

On Wednesday, Burnley travelled to play at Carrington and reportedly defeated Erik ten Hag’s men in the afternoon, and defeated the club 3-1.

This is according to The Athletic, who claim that Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martínez, Casemiro, Luke Shaw, and Amad all played in yesterday’s match. Antony also started and scored a penalty.

Mason Mount did not feature during the game, but he is stepping up his training this week with the first team in a bid to be fit, possibly for minutes against the Wolves.

The returns of Harry Maguire and Casemiro to at least some level of match fitness will be a welcome sight to all those involved. Martínez returned to the team during the 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur two weeks ago.

Next up, United travel to face Newport County away from home in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
