A former Brentford coach has said that a Manchester United-linked midfielder with a sizeable release clause “will arrive” in the Premier League.

Manchester United signed Manuel Ugarte in the summer to bolster their midfield options but more signings in the engine room are expected in the near future.

Casemiro and Christian Eriksen are both likely to depart the club in the summer and we have already seen that Kobbie Mainoo cannot be relied on to run the midfield every game without any injury setbacks.

Morten Hjulmand, a Danish defensive midfielder currently playing for Sporting Lisbon, was linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer.

The 24-year-old has established himself as a key player in Sporting’s midfield since his arrival in the summer of 2023. He has made 48 appearances for the Portuguese outfit last term.

While a move to the Premier League did not materialise in the summer, the Denmark international has been backed to make it in England’s top flight by his new national team manager.

Brian Riemer, formally the assistant coach at Brentford, has been announced as Denmark’s new boss and believes that Hjulmand has what it takes to succeed at a club like United.

“I spent two years in the Premier League and I think he has the necessary qualities to play for the six or seven best clubs in the English league,” Riemer told O Jogo.

“Tottenham, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City… At a certain point in his career, I believe he will arrive at one of these teams.”

What is Morten Hjulmand’s release clause

Hjulmand currently has a sizable release clause in his contract at Sporting of around £67 million and the Portuguese club were unwilling to sell him for any less last summer.

Ruben Amorim, who has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford if Erik ten Hag was to be sacked, reportedly told the Sporting board that he wanted to keep the midfielder despite interest.

The 25-year-old’s current deal at Sporting runs until the summer of 2028, so the Portuguese club remain in power of any offers under the release clause fee with no concerns of his contract running out just yet.
