There have been several Manchester United shirt number changes ahead of the upcoming 2024/25 Premier League campaign.

The Reds started their pre-season preparations earlier this month and have now played two friendly games against Rosenborg and Rangers.

Several players have already impressed Erik ten Hag and his new-look coaching staff, which now includes Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake.

New signings Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee have also come into the club and so many fans have been speaking about the shirt number changes for the upcoming season.

Perhaps the most prominent one so far has been Yoro taking the vacant no.15, previously worn by club legend Nemanja Vidic.

There have also been countless academy players who have received shirt number changes, but there are three in particular which suggest a more prominent role in the first-team squad.

Ethan Wheatley became the club’s 250th academy graduate last season when he made his first-team debut against Sheffield United.

The young striker has started both pre-season games so far and has been awarded with the no.36 for the upcoming campaign. He wore the no.84 last term.

His under-18s teammate Harry Amass could also have a role in the first-team next term due to the problems at left-back. He was very impressive against Rangers.

Amass has changed from no.70 to no.41 despite wearing no.23 – Luke Shaw’s current number – during the pre-season games so far.

Another youth prospect who could be promoted by Ten Hag in the coming season is Toby Collyer. The manager joined the 20-year-old when he extended his contract earlier this month and is reportedly a big admirer of him.

Collyer has impressed during pre-season so far and is likely to contribute in the midfield for Ten Hag’s side. That has been reflected by his shirt number upgrade from no.65 to no.43.

Finally, while Zirkzee has not arrived at Carrington for training yet, as he is on holiday after participating in Euro 2024, he has already explained his shirt number situation.

He will either take the no.11 or no.9, depending on Rasmus Højlund’s preference. The Danish international has returned and is still wearing the no.11, which suggests that Zirkzee will take the no.9 when he returns.
