Fabrizio Romano has explained why Manchester United could sign Victor Osimhen for less than his £63 million Napoli release clause this summer.
Manchester United’s lack of a consistent goal threat has been one of their most pressing issues in recent seasons.
Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes have been the only dependable contributors in front of goal, with Rashford netting 30 times in the 2022/23 campaign.
However, with Rashford expected to leave Old Trafford after his loan spell at Aston Villa, and Fernandes now operating in a deeper role under Rúben Amorim, concerns over the club’s attacking firepower have only grown.
Rasmus Højlund has shown glimpses of real potential but still appears too inexperienced to lead the line on his own. Joshua Zirkzee, meanwhile, tends to thrive when playing behind a traditional number nine rather than being the focal point of the attack.
As the summer transfer window approaches, United are actively exploring attacking reinforcements, with reports naming Victor Osimhen as one of their top targets.
How United can sign Osimhen for less than £63m
With United clearly hot for the Nigerian international as a potential option, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed a scenario that could see United secure the 26-year-old for less than his current £63 million release clause.
As the Italian recently explained, Victor Osimhen is definitely going to leave Galatasaray and return to Napoli, since his loan deal is ending. However, Napoli don’t plan to keep him either — they’re actively looking to sell him as soon as possible.
Unlike last summer, when Osimhen’s transfer saga dragged on until the beginning of September, Napoli want to avoid that this time.
The release clause is set at around £63 million, but Napoli are open to negotiating a different deal if it means getting the transfer done quickly — ideally in June.
So, if United were to establish contact with the Serie A club early and show openness to finding a compromise that genuinely suits all parties involved, Amorim could see his side secure Osimhen for less than the expected £63 million and bring him in before pre-season starts.
United also open to Garnacho sale
While United could secure Osimhen for a lower fee, it would still be expected to be a significant amount, potentially made up of a fixed fee plus bonuses depending on performances.

Previous reports have revealed that, in light of Osimhen’s availability, United have contacted Napoli to understand if they still remain interested in Alejandro Garnacho.
The Serie A side were keen on bringing in the 20-year-old in January to replace Khvicha Kvaratskhelia but an agreement was not reached, and a deal fell through.
However, if Napoli were to remain keen on bringing in the winger this summer, he could either be used as a makewight for the Nigerian striker’s signing, or the two deals could be treated separately in order to maximise each club’s profit on the books.
