Fabrizio Romano has provided the latest on Angel Gomes’ transfer future following Rúben Amorim’s “green light” surrounding Manchester United and the player.

Manchester United are set to prioritise midfield reinforcements this summer as Rúben Amorim looks to address the team’s ongoing struggles in the centre of the pitch.

Creativity has been a major issue for United this season, with the team frequently struggling to break down opposition defences and rarely scoring more than once per game. Their inconsistency at Old Trafford has only added to concerns over their control in midfield.

In January, the club sanctioned several loan departures, with Antony joining Real Betis, Marcus Rashford moving to Aston Villa, and Ethan Wheatley heading to Walsall for the remainder of the campaign.

Further midfield exits are expected at the end of the season, with Christian Eriksen set to leave when his contract expires and Casemiro no longer in Amorim’s plans.

As a result, United are preparing for a key summer transfer window, targeting midfielders who can bring more creativity, energy, and tactical discipline to fit Amorim’s system.

Romano provides Gomes transfer update

With United in need of new midfielders, the club’s budget is well known to be very tight this summer, with some reports putting the initial budget as low as £20 million before sales this summer.

Therefore, it’s expected that the Old Trafford outfit will take a proper look at the free agent market this summer, with multiple high-quality players available for free.

One such player is United Academy graduate and former player Angel Gomes, who’s contract at Lille will expire in June and is gathering interest from a host of clubs across Europe.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided the latest on Gomes, explaining that the player will certainly leave Lille this summer, and that the Premier League is a possible destination for him while Bundesliga clubs are also inquiring.

“Yes, Premier League is a possibility for Angel Gomes while also clubs in the Bundesliga asked for information to his new agents,” Romano told GiveMeSport. “He will 100% leave Lille.”

Amorim gives “green light” for Gomes

This follows on from reports earlier in Amorim’s tenure at United surrounding the potential of Gomes returning to Old Trafford five years after he left the club.

It was claimed back in November that Amorim had identified Gomes as a player who could add to his Old Trafford squad and had already given the “green light” for United to pursue the player this summer.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham, and Newcastle have all been listed as interested parties, but the 24-year-old is said to prefer a return to Old Trafford over any other English side.

“It was a very difficult decision,” Gomes said in 2023 when asked about his departure from the club. “In my heart, I wanted to leave, in my head, I was thinking of staying. But I had to follow my heart. I felt that I needed to take another step in my career.

“I felt that had I stayed, there wouldn’t be a lot of opportunities for me. Luis Campos [Lille’s then sporting director] and Lille spoke about their project and I believed in it even more, that’s what convinced me to move – the faith Lille had in me.

“Do I imagine myself coming back one day? It’s home. I would love to come back. But you never know in football. I just have to keep my feet on the ground and keep playing, making the most of it. I can’t predict what will happen in the future.”
