Explained: Real Betis’ unique offer to finalise Antony transfer from Manchester United

Real Betis are set to submit a new offer for Antony as Manchester United look to sell the Brazilian before the end of the transfer window.

Manchester United have been trying to sell Antony for the majority of the transfer window after he made it clear he wanted to leave Old Trafford.

Rúben Amorim left the former Ajax forward out of his pre-season tour squad and placed him within a group of players that weren’t to be included in United’s plans for next season.

While Marcus Rashford is the only outcast to leave so far this summer, Alejandro Garnacho seems to be close to agreeing a deal with Chelsea, and Antony could be the next to leave.

Real Betis have been pursuing the Brazilian, but have yet to submit an offer that Jason Wilcox and the transfer team deem acceptable.

Antony is said to be keen on a return to Spain after his impressive six-month loan spell last season, and Betis may have finally found a way to make it happen.

Betis submit unique 50% offer for Antony

The main stumbling block in agreeing to Antony’s sale has been his valuation, as Real Betis can’t afford to match United’s demands this summer. However, they may have finally found a solution with just two days left until the window closes.

A Spanish report from ABC has said that Betis will submit an offer for Antony soon, where they will purchase 50% of the player for approximately £22 million.

This means United will still own half of Antony, and Betis will have to offer United more money in the future if they wish to buy the Brazilian outright.

Effectively, United will have a 50% sell-on clause for Antony, where they earn half of any future sales, but rather than it being in the contract, they technically still own the winger.

This type of deal is very unique, but it could be the only way Betis can afford to buy Antony from United, and potentially the only way he leaves the club this summer.

The best outcome for United this summer

Antony was always going to be a difficult man to sell, even after his impressive half-season in Spain. He had his heart set on Betis and rejected every other proposal.

Amorim made it clear that he didn’t want him in the squad – even though he could fill in at right-wing-back for Amad – and United effectively lost all of their negotiating power.

Receiving £22 million for Antony at the halfway point of last season would have been great for United, but his valuation increased due to his form in Spain.

The Red Devils could receive as much as £45 million if Betis can ever afford to buy Antony fully, so this is a great deal for United, and it can allow the transfer team to work on other sales before the end of the deadline.
