European club ‘fear Man Utd will hijack move’ for priority target after Jason Wilcox involved in talks

AC Milan are pushing to sign one of their transfer targets over fears that Manchester United could hijack a potential deal and make life complicated for the Italian side.

Coming into the summer transfer window, Ruben Amorim made it clear that he wanted to prioritise addressing the lack of goal threat from Manchester United’s attacking line.

With the signings of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, he’s done well to bring in significant goal threat, and also vital Premier League experience.

It’s now likely that the club will now prioritise selling players deemed surplus to requirements in order to fund more targets, which are reported to be a natural striker, and also a central midfielder to accompany Bruno Fernandes in the middle of the park.

A recent report however, has indicated that United may try and hijack AC Milan’s deal for Brighton left-back Pervis Estupiñán, as the Milan side try and replace outgoing star Theo Hernandez.

United could make a potential deal complicated

Estupiñán has made it clear that he wants to make a move this summer, with United being amongst the clubs that would be interested.

Recent reports have claimed that United’s transfer chiefs have held talks with the player’s camp, with Jason Wilcox leading things for the Reds this window.

Despite agreeing on provisional terms for a deal, Milan are attempting to accelerate talks as they fear United could swoop in and make a move for the Ecuadorian.

As reported by Gazzetta dello Sport, via Milan News, journalist Luca Bianchin said: “In England, there’s been talk of Manchester United’s interest, which remains to be seen. Serious? Superficial? The success of the negotiations between AC Milan and Brighton will largely depend on the response. There’s hope it’s nothing serious.

“If a major English team were to make a move for Estupinan, it would become, as always, difficult to compete. If, on the other hand, there were no competition, Milan could convince Brighton to reconsider their €23 million request…”

United need to prioritise key positions

Estupiñán would certainly offer vital Premier League experience, having been at Brighton for three seasons now, at times being touted as the best left-back in the league.

Tyrell Malacia and Harry Amass are set to be playing their football elsewhere next season, and Luke Shaw’s fitness is unreliable owing to his history of injury issues.

Diego León was meant to be playing with the Under-21s this season to get up to speed with the demands of the league, but his 45 minute cameo against Leeds in their first pre-season game showed promise that his ascension to the first-team could be sooner rather than later.

There’s no denying that Estupiñán would be a good signing, as 20-year-old Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu would be able to be the understudy and not shoulder the weight of starting most games at such a young age.

The Ecuadorian would be a luxury signing, something United simply don’t have the room for at this stage. They need to address key positions such as striker and central midfield before moving onto players like the 27-year-old.
