Ruud van Nistelrooy will have multiple injuries to contend with as Manchester United face Chelsea in his first Premier League game as interim boss.

Manchester United are set to resume Premier League action on Sunday as they welcome Chelsea to Old Trafford.

In their previous league clash, the Reds were narrowly defeated 2-1 by West Ham after a disputed penalty decision, a result that led to Erik ten Hag’s departure from the club.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has taken charge as interim manager, with Rúben Amorim lined up to assume the role permanently after the November international break.

In their latest outing, United delivered a resounding 5-2 win over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup, securing their place in the quarter-finals, where they’ll face Tottenham Hotspur in London.

Injury latest

Just like last season, United are heading into a busy winter schedule with multiple players still in the treatment room.

In defence, the club are still waiting on Leny Yoro and Tyrell Malacia to continue and finish their rehabilitation. Both players are expected back over the next month, although Yoro’s return may creep into December.

Meanwhile, Harry Maguire remains injured following a calf problem against Aston Villa earlier this month. The defender confirmed he would be out “for a few weeks,” meaning he should be returning soon, but this weekend is likely too fast.

Luke Shaw remains out of action. After suffering an injury in pre-season, he was initially expected back after the September international fixtures but has suffered multiple delays in his recovery. As of now, there is no set return date.

In midfield, Mason Mount is still not back with the squad following an injury at the end of September. Despite the English midfielder saying he was “fine” following a blow against Tottenham, he has not been spotted with the squad since, and there is no update on his potential return.

Kobbie Mainoo is expected to return to the field following the international break in November and may be available for Rúben Amorim as he takes charge of United next month.

Christian Eriksen had to withdraw from the United squad that defeated Leicester City earlier this week, and there has been no update on his condition since. An update may be issued on Saturday evening as part of the embargoed section of Van Nistelrooy’s pre-Chelsea press conference.

Antony remains out with an ankle injury he suffered last week against Fenerbahce after being substituted on the field for 10 minutes. He left Istanbul on crutches with a boot around his left foot.
