Erik ten Hag’s view on Marcel Sabitzer and Wout Weghorst Manchester United futures
Following the loan arrivals of both Marcel Sabitzer and Wout Weghorst in January, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has been quizzed on if he plans to keep the pair at the club permanently.
Despite the club being limited to loan signings in the January transfer window, both Sabitzer and Weghorst have quickly made an impact on the Manchester United squad.
Since his January arrival, Sabitzer has made an appearance in five of the six games he’s been eligible for since joining the Red Devils.
Weghorst meanwhile, has fast cemented his position as United’s starting striker, starting all 12 games United have played since his arrival, already racking up more minutes at the club than fellow striker Anthony Martial this season.
Even with the pair of Sabitzer and Weghorst impressing since their arrivals from Bayern Munich and Burnley respectively, Ten Hag admitted that he feels it is too early to decide on their long-term futures:
“I think it is much too quick (to decide),” said Ten Hag. “(It is) much too soon to talk about that. First, we are in this season and that is where the focus has to be. No distractions.”
Whilst Weghorst and Sabitzer’s futures may remain uncertain as of the time of writing, Ten Hag will need both to remain fit with several absences still plaguing the squad.
Anthony Martial still remains a doubt for tonight’s tie against West Ham in the FA Cup, whereas midfielders Donny van de Beek and Christian Eriksen are still dealing with long-term injuries.
Unlike Sabitzer and Weghorst, fellow January loan arrival Jack Butland is yet to make an appearance for United. However, with United still remaining in three competitions, and David De Gea starting all but 4 of the 40 games United have played so far this season, the door remains open for Butland to start a game before the season ends.
Manchester United vs. West Ham will kick off at 19:45 GMT on Wednesday evening, with the Red Devils looking to push on into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup – a match Ten Hag has made no secret he sees as highly important.
