“I was told…” BBC journalist provides Erik ten Hag future update following Manchester United loss
BBC Sport journalist Simon Stone has provided an update on Erik ten Hag’s future following Manchester United’s 2-1 loss against West Ham.
Manchester United’s struggles in the Premier League continued with a frustrating 2-1 loss to West Ham United.
Despite creating multiple scoring chances in the first half, Højlund, Fernandes, and Dalot couldn’t convert, leaving the door open for West Ham to capitalise.

Crysencio Summerville punished United’s failure to finish by putting West Ham ahead. Although Casemiro managed to level the score with just 10 minutes left, the game took another twist in extra time.
VAR intervened, controversially ruling that Matthijs de Ligt had fouled Danny Ings in the box. After a screen review, the referee awarded a penalty, sparking debate over whether the call met the “clear and obvious” standard for VAR.
Jarrad Bowen stepped up and sent André Onana the wrong way, securing West Ham’s victory. Despite United’s late efforts to push for an equalizer, they couldn’t break through, leaving Ten Hag’s side with more questions than answers as they drop to 14th in the league table.
The latest on Ten Hag’s future
Following the result, further speculation commenced surrounding Ten Hag’s future. The Dutch boss was on thin ice with fans after poor performances across all competitions.
However, according to BBC journalist Simon Stone, as of Friday, the club’s owners still want Ten Hag to succeed in his position, although the Dutchman needs to see his team win games to keep their faith.
“Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag will be wanting to talk about the VAR decision that cost his team at the London Stadium,” Stone explained on the BBC following the full-time whistle.
“But the really important question is what do co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Dan Ashworth think about today’s game.
“United stuck with Ten Hag after his FA Cup final success against Manchester City.
“I was told on Friday the club still want the Dutchman to succeed but he clearly needed to win matches.
“United did not explicitly offer public backing during the international break earlier this month, so I am not anticipating they will do that in the wake of this defeat.
“But clearly, if the verdict is a negative one, we will know that soon enough.”
