Manchester United players will have their weekly salaries capped at £200,000-a-week as Erik ten Hag comes together with bosses to make the huge adjustment at the club.

That’s according to a report from Joe Bernstein of the Daily Mail. It was added that David de Gea will be the first high-wage star to be impacted by the new rule.

The United goalkeeper is currently on a deal worth £375,000-a-week and will have that slashed in a potential new contract with the club.

Luke Shaw, who is also negotiating a new contract with the club as he enters the last 18 months of his deal, will also be impacted.

Marcus Rashford is another, but negotiations with the in-form star could prove more difficult as French club Paris Saint-Germain are willing to double his wages in order to entice a transfer.

It’s no secret that the structure of the wage bill has been, quite frankly, ludicrous at Old Trafford in recent years. The latest annual reports estimate that £228 million was spent on the wages of United players, the highest amount of any club in the Premier League.

The aforementioned report added that Chief Executive Richard Arnold and manager Ten Hag believe that this change will help avoid a culture of dressing-room jealousy in relation to the huge disparity in the earnings of different players in the squad.

The likes of Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes all earn between £180,000 and £200,000 a week, with sanctions if they fail to qualify for the Champions League.

United fans will be extremely pleased with this news and hope that it’s another step towards a squad focused on winning silverware after six years too long await.

It also follows the exit of Cristiano Ronaldo, who was on extraordinary wages at Old Trafford. His contract was terminated in November after an interview with Piers Morgan and the club could see this as a perfect time for a reset.
