Erik ten Hag answers his own question with interesting Man United line-up decision vs Rangers
Erik ten Hag has seemingly answered his own question with an interesting line-up decision for Manchester United’s pre-season friendly against Rangers.
The Reds returned to action last week and played their first game since the FA Cup final victory over Manchester City.
A youthful side were beaten 1-0 by Norweigan side Rosenborg, who are currently mid-way through their domestic campaign.
One of the bright sparks during that game was 20-year-old midfielder Toby Collyer, who came on at half-time and was given the captain’s armband.
The England youth international provided a solid campaign in the game and has been rewarded with a start against Rangers in place of Hannibal Mejbri.
He will play alongside Casemiro and Mason Mount in the midfield, with new signing Leny Yoro stationed next to Jonny Evans in the centre of defence.
Speaking to club media when United returned to training at Carrington last week, the manager suggested that he’s anticipating another ‘surprise’ from the academy this summer.
“In every season, after a break, you will have surprises,” Ten Hag admitted. “We’re looking forward, we’re so curious: who is it this season, the surprise who can contribute to our team?
“Like last year, Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho coming up and playing a big role. They are the two goalscorers in the [Emirates FA Cup] final.
“Today, we started [training], but which player is there who can do the same?”
Now, it appears that the manager has already found the next player to have an increased role for the club next term.
Collyer could provide important depth at Old Trafford, considering United might only sign one midfielder in the transfer market. There are uncertain futures surrounding Scott McTominay, Casemiro and Christian Eriksen.
The 20-year-old had several appearances on the first-team bench last term but is yet to make his competitive debut for the club.
