Edson Alvarez has stated that his full focus is on the Copa America tournament this summer despite reported interest from Manchester United.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, he is ‘almost sure’ that a midfielder will be signed at United if Casemiro departs this summer.

He added that West Ham star and Mexico captain Edson Alvarez is one of the options being discussed internally at Old Trafford.

Alvarez joined The Hammers last summer after four years at Ajax, where he worked under Erik ten Hag. Romano explained that the midfielder is appreciated by the Dutch coach.

However, the Italian reporter finally clarified that a deal with their Premier League counterparts would be difficult for United, with Alvarez considered a key player at the London Stadium.

When the prospect of a move was raised to Alvarez on international duty, he assured reporters that he would only consider his options once the tournament was over.

“I can only tell you that I’m focused on what I have to do,” he explained.

“I know that the Copa America is a very important tournament where the eyes of the world are basically there. Later, there will be time to see what there is or what there isn’t.”

United are linked to a host of midfield players, including 19-year-old Benfica sensation Joao Neves, who is competing at Euro 2024 with Portugal.

Morten Hjulmand of Sporting Lisbon is another with rumours linking him to Old Trafford. He scored a wonder goal for Denmark this week against England.
