“Dynamic” Manchester United star must be dropped by Rúben Amorim to get back to full strength

Rúben Amorim should drop one Manchester United star for the upcoming games; he won’t improve unless given time out of the side.

Manchester United haven’t been good enough this season. Simply put, Rúben Amorim must improve soon, or he will face the sack and become the second manager to be dismissed by Sir Jim Ratcliffe in his short time at Old Trafford.

Despite making brilliant signings in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, United have been atrocious this season, especially against sides who sit off and force the Red Devils to try to break them down.

All of United’s frontmen – including Benjamin Šeško – excel on the counterattack, so breaking opposition down doesn’t come naturally to them. This wouldn’t be a huge issue if the rest of the squad could move the ball quickly, but they can’t.

Bruno Fernandes is still adapting to life as a deep-lying playmaker, while his midfield partner – Casemiro or Manuel Ugarte – usually struggles with progressing play and finding the frontmen.

In Amorim’s system, the wing-backs are crucial to moving the ball up the pitch. However, whoever plays there this season seems to have a poor final product.

Dorgu needs time out of the starting side

Since his move in January, Patrick Dorgu has been almost an ever-present at left-wing-back, with very few other options to play in that position. Even with Diego Leon now at the club, Dorgu has continued to start, although Diogo Dalot has featured once on the left side.

Dorgu – who has been described as “dynamic” – hasn’t played his best football this campaign, despite impressing in pre-season. However, Amorim continues to pick the young Dane ahead of other options.

At just 20 years old, Dorgu shouldn’t be a regular starter for United, especially when the squad is trying to rebuild under a struggling manager. Instead, Amorim should look to Luke Shaw and return him to left-wing-back after an inconsistent shift in central defence.

Shaw has always done his best work when bombing down the left-hand side, but his new role restricts him to the halfway line. Ayden Heaven could replace the England international in the back three and allow Dorgu time away from the spotlight.

Dorgu remains a promising talent, but he will never reach his full potential if he is forced to play through bad form in a struggling side. Amorim should know he has to take him out of the side for the time being.

Dorgu needs Amorim to stay at United

While he isn’t currently playing his best football, Dorgu needs Amorim to stay at United if he wants to remain at Old Trafford himself.

Unlike most players in the squad, Dorgu would struggle to play in a back four system, due to his attacking tendencies and positioning. The Denmark international is a natural wing-back and would transition better to the wing, rather than full-back in a back four.

If United choose to sack Amorim, they will likely return to a manager who favours a back four system, as appointing another back three manager could cause a disturbance in the United fan base.

Dorgu could play in a four if the right-back inverts into defence, but Noussair Mazroui and Diogo Dalot are both natural full-backs who like to balance defence and attack. Dorgu needs Amorim.
