Douglas Luiz has responded to criticism following his celebration of Aston Villa’s goal against Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.

Aston Villa‘s equalising goal in the second half was not enough to keep Manchester United at bay after Erik ten Hag’s introduction of Scott McTominay ensured all three points with five minutes to play at Villa Park.

Rasmus Højlund‘s opening goal of the game – the fifth Premier League fixture he has netted in a row – was cancelled out by Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz, who decided to shimmy right in front of United’s players as a celebration.

This was, of course, ultimately a move that returned little fruit, considering that Villa went on to lose 2-1 due to McTominay’s winning header, but it did bring a load of heat aimed at Luiz.

One person in particular who thought to sarcastically check up on Luiz was ex-United central defender Rio Ferdinand, where Luiz then quoted his tweet to claim that he is “good” and just celebrating carnival in Brazil, which can easily be read in a rather salty manner.

Ferdinand wasn’t the only defender to have his say directly to Luiz, with Raphaël Varane also going directly at the midfielder after McTominay’s goal.

United have now climbed within five points from Villa and six points from Tottenham, with Ten Hag’s sights now set firmly on Champions League qualification.
