Scott McTominay has praised two ‘immense’ Manchester United teammates after he scored the winning goal in a 2-1 victory against Aston Villa.

McTominay, 27, scored an excellent header to secure the three points after Aston Villa looked certain to get something from the game following their equaliser.

The hosts were pressuring United’s defence for the most part of the game. But they were largely unsuccessful.

Their only goal came after a fortunate flick from Luiz after a shot was taken towards André Onana’s net.

Speaking after the game, McTominay was full of praise for the ‘immense’ duo of Harry Maguire and Raphaël Varane in centre-back, who both dealt with the pressure from Villa’s attack very well.

“We started really well, but they are a really good team and came back into it and caused us problems,” began McTominay when speaking to Sky Sports.

“The guys at the back were immense, particularly Harry [Maguire] and Raphael [Varane]. It was a top-level performance and a deserved win in the end.”

McTominay scored yet another goal after coming off the bench. His four Premier League strikes as a substitute is the joint-most of any player this season.

Some players could feel hard done by after being on the bench for a period. The academy graduate has a different attitude, though.

“I feel like as long as I’m fit and healthy, I can come onto the pitch and perform. I don’t take it personally [that he started on the bench], I just want to come in and try and do the best I can for this. Long may it continue.

“It was an unbelievable cross to be fair, whipped with a lot of pace. I just needed it to hit my head and get it on target. Full credit to the boys, we created a lot of good chances which may go unnoticed.

“Every game you win is massive for taking a step forward and confidence for the boys. It is all positive but it is about repeating it and not getting too far ahead of ourselves when we win a few. We’ve got to repeat it now.”
