Alan Shearer has blasted Antony for making life more difficult for strikers, claiming the player would do “his nut in” as a winger.

Antony signed for Manchester United for £85 million in the summer of 2022 and started in Erik ten Hag‘s 0-0 draw against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

Antony has caused controversy since his arrival, initially scoring in his first three games before goals dried up, and some criticised his performances as being one-dimensional.

One of those is Alan Shearer, legendary striker and the all-time Premier League goalscorer, who has claimed that he would hate to play with Antony as a winger because he always cuts inside on his left foot.

“On the right-hand side, you’ve got Antony, he would do my nut in playing with him because, you know, 99.9 per cent of the time, he’s coming inside on that left foot,” he said on BBC Match of the Day.

“Not only do the defenders know, so they can then set themselves.”

Further to this, Shearer shared his sympathy for United’s striker on the evening Rasmus Højlund, who is yet to score a Premier League goal after signing for the club this summer.

Højlund also started at Anfield and was presented with one good chance in the game via Scott McTominay, but Antony failed to produce any significant changes for the young Danish forward.

Shearer continued: “On the odd occasion if he (Antony) did go down on the right-hand side, it might make it a little bit more difficult, but for a centre-forward, it doesn’t half make it very difficult when he’s doing that.”
