If reports are to be believed, Matthijs de Ligt is open to joining Erik ten Hag at Manchester United this summer.

Manchester United are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements this summer after conceding 81 goals across all competitions, including a record 52 in the Premier League.

With Raphaël Varane departing and the futures of Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelöf, and Jonny Evans uncertain, the club has already agreed on personal terms with Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite early in the transfer window.

However, with that deal currently stalling due to Everton’s asking price, United have moved their attention to Matthijs de Ligt. The Dutchman is reportedly open to signing for the Old Trafford outfit.

According to journalist Florian Plettenberg, the 24-year-old is “ready” to leave Bayern Munich, the club he joined in 2022, this summer, and is open to joining his former manager Ten Hag at United.

Plettenberg also revealed that United have “gathered more information” about De LIgt in the last few days and that he will be allowed to leave Munich if a “suitable offer” is tabled.

United are said to have opened talks with De Ligt and his representatives, although the two clubs have yet to contact each other regarding a move.

De Ligt is currently at the 2024 European championship with the Netherlands, who are competing against Romania during the round of 16 of the competition. While at the camp, he confirmed that he is not currently open to talking about the prospect of a move this summer.

“I’ve already said this is not the time for me to think about it. We’re playing at the Euros now, and that’s very important for me and the national team,” he recently told reporters while at the tournament.

“That’s why I can’t say now what I think about this situation. But what I can say is that I’ve now played my second season at Bayern – I’m very happy. For now, I’m focused on the Euros, and then we’ll see what happens.”
