David Ornstein has hinted that Manchester United are targeting several signings amid growing interest in Matheus Cunha.
Manchester United are reportedly getting closer to sign Mateus Cunha from Wolves as summer transfer window approaches.
The 25-year-old has emerged as a key target for the Red Devils and reports from Fabrizio Romano suggest United are now leading the race for his signature.
Despite Cunha’s £62.5 million release clause, initial talks have reportedly generated ‘good feelings’, raising hopes that a deal could be struck.
It’s clear to see why United are interested because Cunha has enjoyed an impressive campaign in the Premier League after netted 14 goals and 4 assists — a standout return in a struggling Wolves side.
In contrast, United’s frontline has lacked consistency throughout the season especially when Rasmus Højlund has managed just three goals in 28 league appearances.
With the club eyeing another option for striker, they still need another player that could bring creativity and fill the space behind the main forward like Cunha.
David Ornstein reveals United’s focus on multiple targets
Cunha may be edging closer to a move to Old Trafford, but United’s summer plans go far beyond just landing the Wolves forward. The club are understood to be preparing for a significant shake-up in the final third — with reinforcements targeted both up front and in attacking midfield.
Transfer expert David Ornstein shed light on United’s thinking during an appearance on Sky Sports News, suggesting the club won’t stop at just one creative addition.
“He has Premier League experience. He plays the sort of football that United have been missing this season, crucially, he hits the back of the net. He’s creative, he plays in the final third of the pitch, where United have been struggling,” Ornstein explained.
“They’ll have to work out where he fits in due to the presence of someone like Bruno Fernandes. But I do think there’ll be quite a lot of change at United this summer. They’ll be looking to bring in a striker, too, as an equal priority to this No.10.”
The comments align with recent reports suggesting United are open to parting ways with several squad members to fund this attacking rebuild, with Liam Delap and Victor Osimhen among the strikers the Reds are looking at.
In recent days, Højlund has also been linked with a potential exit — with some outlets claiming the club would consider the price around £30 million, a significant drop from the £64 million spent on him less than two years ago.
Is Cunha a perfect fit in Amorim’s system?
The Premier League is often called the toughest league in the world, and for good reason. The pace, pressure, and spotlight can overwhelm even the most talented players. That’s why signing someone who’s already proven themselves in England can make all the difference.
Cunha offers just that. He’s already adjusted to the demands of the league at Wolves, showing he can handle the physicality, intensity, and expectations that come with it. For United, that means less risk, more readiness.

Tactically, Cunha also fits the mould. He played in a 3-4-3 system under Vitor Pereira — a shape that aligns well with what Rúben Amorim is already implementing at Old Trafford. That familiarity could make his integration smoother and more immediate.
Cunha may not be the flashiest name on the market, but he might just be the right one. With Manchester United’s attacking overhaul in full swing, Cunha’s Premier League experience and tactical versatility could be exactly what the club needs.
