David Moyes insists Rúben Amorim’s unusual choice is “not a weakness”, Roy Keane agrees
David Moyes has praised Ruben Amorim for a controversial tactical approach he could use at Manchester United and Roy Keane agrees with him.
Ruben Amorim is set to take charge of Manchester United next week and the new head coach has a big job on his hands at Old Trafford.
David Moyes was the first manager to fail at Old Trafford following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson. Five permanent bosses have already followed in a similar trend.
However, as he did before getting the United job, Moyes continued to have a good managerial career after being sacked, with his biggest achievement being the UEFA Conference League win with West Ham.
Speaking on The Overlap this week, Moyes complimented the way that Amorim is open to adapting to opposition.
The former United boss believes that the insistence that many other coaches now have against adjusting their tactical approach is a ‘weakness’ in their management style.
Moyes said: “We’re finding quite a lot that coaches at the moment aren’t flexible and almost are saying, ‘this is the way I play, I don’t change this’.
“Maybe some people look at that and think it’s very strong and powerful, I look at it and think it’s a wee bit of a weakness.
“It’s interesting, I think the manager of Sporting, Amorim, done a piece saying he was very interested in the opposition.
“He would always play to how the opposition plays, or work out what you think… In a way I think there’s been a negative period if you think that way.”
“I think it’s madness when I see it,” Roy Keane added while speaking about clubs who may look to play a certain style without adjusting at all when things aren’t going their way.
“When I see teams most weekends, they’re losing lots of games and the managers come out and say, ‘this is the way we play’… madness.”
