Manchester United sporting director Dan Ashworth has explained the background behind his ‘first big decision’ at the club.

Ashworth was officially appointed as Manchester United’s new sporting director at the beginning of the month after finalising an agreement with Newcastle United.

Following a lengthy dispute that seemed destined for arbitration, the clubs reached a resolution, allowing Ashworth to begin his duties at Old Trafford immediately.

The 53-year-old has assumed a leading role at United, working alongside technical director Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada.

Ashworth has addressed the United fans for the first time this week in a lengthy article on the club’s website and one topic was the renewal of Erik ten Hag’s contract.

The Dutch manager’s future was uncertain but Ashworth and the new team at Old Trafford decided to keep him at the club.

“Omar Berrada has started as chief executive and Jason Wilcox as technical director, and I can assure you that we have lost no time in getting to work,” Ashworth began.

“Our first big decision of the summer was to extend Erik ten Hag’s contract as men’s first-team manager to June 2026, reflecting our strong belief in him as one of Europe’s top coaches, and the partner we want to continue working with to get the team back to the levels expected.

“We are all clear that last season fell below the required standards in the Premier League and Champions League but, by winning the FA Cup in such impressive fashion, our players and staff showed what they are capable of when everyone pulls together and performs to their potential.

“Our collective challenge is to reach those levels much more consistently. It’s my job, together with Jason, to create the right support structures and environment around Erik, the staff and players to make that possible.

“Already, I can feel a strong sense of energy and determination around the group as the players and staff return fresh from their breaks, including some exciting new additions to the squad and to the coaching team.”

Ten Hag has seen Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake join his coaching staff and new signings such as Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee have already came in.

The Reds will begin their Premier League campaign next month and are currently in the midst of their pre-season after facing Rangers and Rosenborg.
