Clarence Seedorf: Man Utd wonderkid Kobbie Mainoo has one key attribute that I never had
Clarence Seedorf has welcomed comparisons between himself and Manchester United starlet Kobbie Mainoo but admits there is an key skill the teenager trumps him in.
Seedorf, 48, is known as one of the best midfield players to grace the sport. He excelled for the likes of AC Milan and Real Madrid during his illustrious career.
United’s talented midfielder, who emerged onto the scene in November last year, has drawn comparisons to the Dutch legend due to his playstyle in the middle of the park.
“I’m not saying he’s of the same ability, or that he’s that player yet, but he gives me vibes of Clarence Seedorf,” Rio Ferdinand said on TNT Sports after Kobbie Mainoo’s winning goal against Wolves in February.
“The way he manoeuvres in tight situations and the way he manipulates this ball and uses his body at times.”
Mainoo scored the winning goal in the FA Cup final and is now in Germany, ready to help England try and win their first tournament since 1966.
The 19-year-old’s journey has been excellent so far, and while comparisons to Seedorf put big pressure on Mainoo’s shoulders, it appears that the 48-year-old agrees with those similarities.
“He reminds me of a young me with his body and movement,” Seedorf said, as per FIVE.
“But the thing that he has that I never did is his maturity on the ball at such a young age.
“[The] sky is the limit for him.”
Mainoo’s maturity on and off the pitch has been one of his standout qualities despite him being able to display mastery with the ball at his feet.
It is something that will undoubtedly help him as the pressure builds, for England and United, going forward.
