Chelsea’s unique clause in Cole Palmer’s contract revealed after Manchester United admission
Cole Palmer’s future at Chelsea is no guarantee despite a long-term contract and it is well known that the creative midfielder is a boyhood Manchester United fan.
Cole Palmer has quickly become one of the best players in the Premier League over the last two seasons and many Manchester United fans still wonder how he slipped through the club’s grasps as a young player.
The Chelsea star grew up in Wythenshawe, the same area as Marcus Rashford, but came through the ranks at rival club Manchester City.
When he was not getting the first-team opportunities he desired under Pep Guardiola, Palmer made the brave decision to move elsewhere and Chelsea signed him for £40 million in 2023.
Since his debut for the Stamford Bridge outfit, Palmer has scored 39 goals and registered 21 assists in 73 appearances for the club, proving himself as one of the best young talents in Europe.
Palmer signed a staggering seven-year deal at the Blues when he joined two years ago and he has since penned a renewal until June 2033.
Chelsea’s unique clause in Palmer’s contract
Despite looking like he is locked in a contract at Stamford Bridge for another eight years, Palmer could end up departing Chelsea if they do not secure Champions League football next season.
Palmer is yet to play a game in Europe’s elite competition for the Blues and it is unlikely that he’d want to make that three consecutive years considering he is one of the best players in the country.
Chelsea seemed like they would be certain to secure qualification through their position in the Premier League after a tremendous start to the season under Enzo Maresca.
However, with just three wins in their last eleven games, the form under the ex-Leicester City manager is worrying Chelsea fans, with the club now in sixth-place.
Interestingly, it has been reported by TeamTalk that some Chelsea players will consider leaving the club if they do not secure Champions League football next term.
It was claimed that there are clauses in certain contracts, like for Palmer, which would force Chelsea to consider offers if they fail to reach Europe’s elite competition.
This follows on from Palmer admitting that his admiration for United has not disappeared since becoming a professional player.
In an interview with Sky Sports recently, the playmaker was asked whether it is weird to play against United now, or whether his support for them is ‘long-gone’ and if you have to let go of who you support as a player.
“Nah when I do go back to the stadium it’s good because obviously I used to go and watch matches there and stuff,” the Chelsea ace responded.
United not well-placed for Palmer move
Unfortunately, despite Palmer’s clear love for the club and the possibility that an exit from Chelsea could happen, United are not best-placed for a move – far from it.
Unless Ruben Amorim’s side manage to win the Europa League this term, they will also be out of the Champions League, which would make any deal for Palmer almost impossible.
And even if United do manage to secure their place in the competition next season, even a boyhood fan like Palmer would need a lot of convincing of the project at Old Trafford, which looks questionable as things stand.

Finally, there would be serious competition for Palmer’s signature and a huge price – likely over the £100 million mark – would be needed to sign him. United have well-known financial constraints they are dealing with.
Palmer could be on the move this summer, but United do not seem like they are in the position to even be in the conversation. However, stranger things have happened in football.
