Casemiro contract change revealed as Man United midfielder sends clear message to Erik ten Hag
Casemiro’s latest contract change has been revealed as the Manchester United manager sends a clear message to manager Erik ten Hag.
The Reds have had an uneasy start to the new season, securing just one Premier League win in their first three matches.
A disappointing 3-0 loss to rivals Liverpool followed a last-minute defeat against Brighton last weekend. They won against Fulham on the opening weekend.
Many improvements are needed in Erik ten Hag’s side and the attention right now is on Casemiro after he made two mistakes leading to goals during the game against Liverpool.
The Brazilian midfielder has been far from impressive since his debut season in Red, and it seemed like United wanted to sell him in the summer window, but there were no bidders.
Speaking on the Talk of the Devils podcast this week, Laurie Whitwell revealed the wage cut that Casemiro and the other players at United had after failing to qualify for the Champions League last term.
“Yeah, I don’t know the full details, but they’re not paying the full wages. It’s a significant amount, we’re told,” Whitwell replied when initially asked how much of Jadon Sancho’s wages Chelsea would be paying during his loan at Stamford Bridge.
“I don’t know the exact figures because also, with the lack of qualification [for the] Champions League, there’s a cut.
“There’s a cut in Casemiro’s wages, for example, you know, where we were mentioning his salary. It is 25%, I’m told, so it comes down quite significantly.”
Casemiro has reportedly been on around £350,000 per week at Old Trafford since joining from Real Madrid in the summer of 2022.
That means he would have a wage cut of just less than £90,000 per week, taking the total amount down to around £260,000 per week.
Meanwhile, the 32-year-old has sent a clear message to Erik ten Hag about what he thinks about the tactics employed at Old Trafford.
According to Andy Mitten, speaking on the same podcast, Casemiro was not happy with the tactics at United last season as he felt they exposed his weaknesses and did not help him.
There were reports last season which explained that Casemiro and Raphaël Varane did not like the way that United were playing and that the experienced pair shared this opinion with their teammates.
With Varane now gone, Casemiro looks likely to become Manuel Ugarte’s backup. But one thing that is needed is results. Otherwise, the tactics at Old Trafford will change.
