Following Rúben Amorim’s sacking at Manchester United, immediate questions have been asked about whether the club can recall Marcus Rashford from Barcelona.
Rúben Amorim has been dismissed as Manchester United head coach following Sunday afternoon’s 1-1 draw with Leeds at Elland Road.
After the match, Amorim delivered a fiery post-match rant, stating that he wanted to speak to the club’s manager rather than their head coach.
In parallel, several reports have pointed to growing tension between Amorim and Director of Football Jason Wilcox, particularly over the team’s playing style and transfer strategy.
United, however, have insisted that the decision to sack the 40-year-old was not the result of an internal power struggle, but instead due to a continued lack of progress on the pitch.
Can Rashford be recalled from Barcelona?
One of Amorim’s first contentious moves while in charge of United was to freeze Marcus Rashford out of the first team for what he deemed a lack of effort and graft in training, within six weeks of his tenure beginning.
The England international then joined Aston Villa on loan for the second half of the 2024/25 campaign, and after they did not exercise their £40 million option to buy the winger, he signed for Barcelona on loan for the 2025/26 season.
But with Amorim no longer at the helm of United, the question has been raised whether the club could recall Rashford this month amid their search for further attacking refinements.
However, it was clarified by The Sun when the deal was initially signed that United did not insert any form of recall clause in their agreement with Barcelona – although the Catalan club also do not have any penalties if they were to choose to terminate the loan early.
Rashford’s return to United is not out of the question
Despite United not having a recall clause, it is not guaranteed that the 28-year-old will never play for United again. As explained above, Barcelona could still terminate the deal early, although considering his form of seven goals and 11 assists in 25 appearances is top draw.

The La Liga giants have the option to sign Rashford for £26 million in the summer, but there have been conflicting reports on whether they will exercise it.
Spanish media have reported that manager Hansi Flick is delighted with the winger, but that the Barcelona board is hesitant to sanction the transfer due to his age.
According to reports, they do not want to sign a player who will be turning 29 early into next season, and are instead expected to focus on bringing in younger players, which could see Rashford return to his boyhood club.
