Bruno Fernandes sends touching message to Kobbie Mainoo after Euro 2024 final defeat
Bruno Fernandes has sent a touching message to Manchester United teammate Kobbie Mainoo after England fell to defeat against Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
Mainoo, 19, became England’s youngest-ever player to start in a competitive final on Sunday evening after impressing all tournament for Gareth Southgate’s men.
The United starlet did not have the most impactful game against a Spain team that dominated the ball and took advantage of England’s poor pressing structure.
Despite Cole Palmer’s equalising goal in the 73rd minute, the Spaniards secured a 2-1 victory with a late winner through Mikel Oyarzabal.
It was a great experience for Mainoo, who was one of England’s best players across the Euros, but also a painful one after getting so close to creating history for the country.
The 19-year-old took to Instagram on Monday to reflect, writing: “Devastated to fall short but proud and grateful to compete in my first major international tournament for my country. We will be back.”
Club captain Bruno Fernandes was quick to offer his support to the teenager and responded with a heartfelt message in the comments.
“What’s yours will come to you, and a bright future is waiting for you,” the Portuguese midfielder wrote, with a heart emoji at the end of his message.
Fernandes and Portugal exited the tournament at the quarter-finals stage after a penalty shootout defeat against France.
Both of United’s midfielders will be back at Carrington following their post-tournament holidays, with Ten Hag’s squad already starting to prepare for the 2024/25 Premier League campaign.
