Borussia Dortmund’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl has released a statement in response to questions about signing Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho permanently

Sancho, 23, rejoined the German club in the January transfer window after he was exiled from Erik ten Hag’s first-team squad at United.

The English wide man was originally signed from the Bundesliga outfit in the summer of 2021 for a fee of around £73 million but had an underwhelming spell at Old Trafford.

Now, looking to reignite his career at his former club, Sancho’s longer-term future at Dortmund has been clarified.

When speaking to Sky Germany, Kehl explained that it is not ‘realistic’ for the club to sign Sancho on a permanent deal.

A buy-option was not included in the loan deal to allow the winger to return there and the sporting director has described the possibility of him staying beyond the season as ‘very, very difficult’.

“Unfortunately for both players (Sancho and Ian Maatsen), neither option was really realistic. If you know what we got for Jadon Sancho two and a half years ago, then you know also that it might now be very, very difficult,” explained the 43-year-old.

“We naturally advocated for an option with him – and also with Ian – but the negotiating position was not such that we could implement it, and so we will accept it for now.”

Sancho assisted on his first game back to Dortmund but missed the latest clash against FC Heidenheim with a muscular injury.
