Besiktas manager Senol Günes addresses Wout Weghorst impending Man United transfer for first time
Besiktas manager Senol Günes understands Wout Weghorst’s preference to sign with Manchester United and says that developments are underway.
The 30-year-old forward has spent the season on loan with the Turkish club from Burnley. He has scored eight goals so far this term.
Whilst there is an option to buy in his Besiktas contract, Weghorst and United are looking to overcome that problem in order to welcome the player to Erik ten Hag’s squad, who are in need of offensive reinforcements ahead of a busy period of fixtures.
Senol Günes was asked about the prospect of losing the Netherlands international and explained that whilst he is important for their Süper Lig campaign, they are allowing him to make the move.
“He is an important player for us,” said Günes. “But of course, that is not enough. He will have to talk to the club first.
“I have heard that there are developments, but the transfer is not yet complete. He can only leave if he has spoken to me and the club first.”
Fabrizio Romano has added that both player and club sides are confident of completing the deal.
Weghorst scored for the Turkish side in their 2-1 win against Kasımpaşa S.K. on Saturday and appeared to say his goodbyes to the supporters in his celebrations.
He will offer Ten Hag’s men a different option up front than Anthony Martial and will be a similar profile to many strikers that have excelled under the Dutch manager.
Speaking on the need for a striker following Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure, the United manager said: “We have lost a striker so we need to get a striker in, but has to be the right one who brings quality into the team, not just adding to the squad.
“That only causes problems. The criteria is high here at Manchester United.”
