Benni McCarthy reveals “little-known” Manchester United star, he’s “incredible” and can score goals
Former Manchester United coach Benni McCarthy has outlined a “little-known” player who can fix Erik ten Hag’s goalscoring problems.
Erik ten Hag’s role as Manchester United manager is under serious threat following a third Premier League defeat in just six matches this season.
With the team sitting 13th in the table and struggling to a draw at home against FC Twente in their Europa League opener, calls for the Dutchman to be sacked have grown louder among fans.
The 3-0 loss to Tottenham marked a significant low. Beyond the humiliation of a home defeat, Ten Hag’s side appeared disjointed, uninspired, and chaotic despite featuring eight players he had brought into the squad.
A criticism that plagued United this season is their lack of goals. The side have scored 13 across their opening eight matches, but seven of these came in a single 7-0 win over League One outfit Barnsley in the Carabao Cup.
They are thoroughly underperforming their xG in the Premier League, having scored just five goals in six games, and if they want to climb from their low position in the table, they need to start converting their chances.
Speaking to Portuguese outlet ZeroZero, former United coach Benni McCarthy, who left at the end of last season, picked out the players who impressed him most at United.
“Lisandro Martinez. He has the passion, the fighting spirit, the personality. He can play for any team in the world because he has the right mentality.
“Besides Lisandro… Marcus Rashford. He’s getting back to his best and could hurt FC Porto with some moves. Finally, Alejandro Garnacho. I really like Garnacho, but he needs to play more regularly. I don’t know if there’s a problem between him and Erik, but he hasn’t been a regular starter.”
Further, McCarthy added that, in Amad Diallo, United have a “little-known” star who could be the solution to Ten Hag’s goalscoring issues.
“Oh, and just one more: Amad Diallo. An incredible, incredible player, still little-known,” he said.
“He defends and attacks well, always makes the best decisions and knows how to score goals.”
Amad has started four of United’s six Premier League fixtures so far this term, and the two he has not played against, Liverpool and Tottenham, have both been at Old Trafford and have both been 3-0 losses.
