Ashley Young has revealed that Manchester United blocked him from departing the club to a Premier League rival before his eventual departure.

Young, 38, is currently playing his football at Everton. The winger-turned-fullback spent nine years at Old Trafford after Sir Alex Ferguson signed him in 2011.

The one-time Premier League winner is currently one of the oldest players in the Premier League, and he switched to punditry duty this week.

Interestingly, the former United captain revealed that he was blocked from a move to another Premier League club around two years before he moved to Inter Milan in 2020.

Young was ‘blocked’ from Premier League move

Speaking on Monday Night Football following United’s embarrassing 4-0 defeat against Crystal Palace, Young revealed that he had planned to leave United around two years prior to his eventual 2020 exit.

The former club captain stated that Antonio Conte was interested in signing him for Chelsea; however, United “blocked” the move.

“He wanted me at Chelsea a couple of years prior to that as well. One thing or another led to the move being blocked in the end, so I wasn’t able to go,” he said.

Young would go on to play under Conte when he moved to Inter Milan in the 2020 January transfer window. He had originally planned to make the transfer to Italy in the previous summer but that was also blocked by the Old Trafford club.

He won the Scudetto during his only full season in Italy before moving back to Aston Villa in the summer of 2021.

Speaking to Sky Sports in 2020, Young was asked about Conte: “He wanted me a couple of years ago at Chelsea and he’s a fantastic manager.

“He’s won trophies and he’s got an ambition to want to achieve things. I want to do that as well, I want to achieve here at Inter.

“I want to win trophies, I want to win titles, and with a manager like that, you want to go out there and fight for him.”
