Ashley Young agrees with Jamie Carragher on “embarrassing” Man United player vs Crystal Palace
Manchester United produced an embarrassing display against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, and Ashley Young agreed with Jamie Carragher on one player’s performance.
The Reds lost their 13th game of the Premier League season in what was the worst result and performance of the season.
In fairness, you could pick out similar levels of performance, but teams did not punish United in the way that Palace did. A 4-0 defeat was kind to United.
Casemiro produced one of the worst individual performances of the season and perhaps the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.
After being considered a star signing last term, United will be scratching their heads at how the Brazilian has played this season.
He was at fault for three of the four goals with two awful slide tackles, and then he was muscled off the ball when he tried to let it run out of play.
What Carragher and Young said
Speaking on the no.18, Ashley Young and Jamie Carragher were in agreement on his performance, particularly in his role for the first goal, when speaking on Monday Night Football at half-time.
Carragher told Sky Sports: “He [Olise] doesn’t even sprint in there, he just jogs in there. He’s like, I’ll just go in there because every player in the league gets the ball between the lines against Manchester United.”
Young added: “As for this now (Casemiro’s attempted tackle), it’s, it’s, it’s shambolic to be honest. Casemiro, I don’t know what he’s, what he’s thinking, what he’s doing. Maybe he thinks that Olise is going to go backwards.
“But, you know, Olise sees that he’s going to come out and try and make a challenge and he literally just walks past him. It’s so easy, it’s so easy.”
Carragher concluded that Ten Hag needed to bring the Brazilian off: “Listen, he’s playing out of position tonight. This has got nothing to do with playing out of position. That could be in a holding field role. I mean, that is embarrassing.
“I mean, they need to bring them off. He needs to come off the pitch. Honestly, nothing, nothing can be worse than Casemiro playing centre-back in the second half of Manchester United.
“Put Wan-Bissaka in the middle and bring someone on at full-back.”
Carragher wasn’t wrong
Carragher’s comments aged pretty well, considering Casemiro’s second-half performance.
If anyone was considering whether the club should really sell him, that performance should make their minds up.
It was a tremendous first season at Old Trafford for the midfielder, yet his signing, on the wages and five-year deal, remains a decision that INEOS will want to avoid.
