One sought-after La Liga midfielder has been targeted by Manchester United as the Reds prioritise a new double-pivot option after a poor start to the season.
As Premier League clubs turn their recruitment focus to the January transfer window, it seems Arsenal has joined the race for a sought-after La Liga midfielder and is set to rival Manchester United for his signature.
Despite signing Christian Norgaard in the summer, Arsenal is looking for even more reinforcements for their midfield, as the Gunners look to step up their title charge.
The Reds are also looking for more reinforcements in the centre of the field, as the likes of Manuel Ugarte and Casemiro have gotten off to a poor start to the season.
The club has identified a new defensive midfielder to join Ruben Amorim’s squad, and despite an extensive transfer saga with Carlos Baleba and now Adam Wharton, the perfect signing could be playing in La Liga currently.
Arsenal set to step up chase for Agoume
Arsenal have made a strong start to the league and are aiming to dislodge Liverpool from their perch this season. Reports now suggest that the London club are looking to strengthen its midfield with the acquisition of Lucien Agoume.
The North London side would therefore be joining the race with United for the player, who saw him as an alternative to Carlos Baleba in the summer and are still keeping tabs.
The 23-year-old has been on fire for Sevilla, and since leaving Inter Milan permanently, Agoume has proven he is a very competent midfielder and has caught the eye of Europe’s elites.
That said, Agoume is yet to succeed at the elite level, and that shows when Arsenal favoured Norgaard over the younger Frenchman.
Caughtoffside said, “He is a player they looked at in the summer, but in the end they moved for Christian Norgaard to fill the hole left in the squad by Jorginho’s departure.”
Football Transfers has reported that Agoume was open to a move in the summer; this may leak over to January, and one of either United or Arsenal may look to make an offer.
Agoume would thrive under Amorim’s United
The 23-year-old has been exceptional at Sevilla, holding his place in the midfield since signing in 2024, and has now attracted the interest of top European clubs.
With the Reds prioritising a new defensive midfielder, Agoume could be the perfect option to play alongside captain Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo in rotation.

Amorim has been crying out for a mobile central midfielder who can cover ground. Casemiro, despite his vast experience, is not able to get around the pitch as much as he used to.
The fans will support United’s decision to rival Arsenal for Agoume’s signature, and would love to see the 23-year-old at Old Trafford in the near future.
