The Argentine media have made a “major threat” claim involving Alejandro Garnacho after it was confirmed he would miss out on the latest international squad.
Alejandro Garnacho’s future looks set to be away from Old Trafford, due to his comments in the aftermath of the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, as he explicitly called out Rúben Amorim for choosing Mason Mount ahead of him.
The Argentine did feature off the bench in the final, but that appears to be his final competitive appearance in a United shirt, having been left out of the final Premier League game of last season against Aston Villa.
Along with other outcasts, Garnacho was included in the “Bomb Squad”: a group of players that weren’t included on the pre-season tour of the USA that Jason Wilcox needed to sell. However, all but one of the “Bomb Squad” remain at United, with Marcus Rashford the only one to move.
The transfer deadline is on September 1 – for most clubs in Europe – so securing moves for the four other outcasts, and Rasmus Hojlund, will be crucial if United want to make another addition to add to their already impressive summer.
Argentine media say Garnacho’s international future in doubt
After Angel Di Maria’s retirement, Garnacho appeared to have a clear run at the national team, but his uncertain future has led to his exclusion from the Argentina setup, having not been chosen for the next international break.
TyC Sports, a major media outlet in Argentina, made a statement on Garnacho’s international future after it was confirmed he wouldn’t play for his country in the next break, which includes World Cup qualifiers.
“After his participation in the Copa América,” said the media organisation. “And with Ángel Di María’s retirement from the Argentine national team, his place in the coach’s mind seemed assured. He was a great promise, but so far he hasn’t been able to prove it. His stagnant current form poses a major threat to fulfilling one of his greatest dreams: playing in the next World Cup.”
Garnacho looks set for a move to Chelsea, but he won’t be guaranteed a first-team spot after Enzo Maresca’s side signed Jamie Bynoe-Gittens from Borussia Dortmund. They also remain interested in Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig, even if Garnacho joins the club.
Garnacho made the theatre dream
Old Trafford – also named “The Theatre of Dreams” – has long been a place where exciting wide players shine, whether they come through the academy or join the club at a young age. Garnacho was the most recent winger to shine at United.
Like Rashford before him, Garnacho quickly gained fans after his debut against Chelsea because of his willingness to take players on and run at the backline.
He was quickly compared to Cristiano Ronaldo for his dribbling style and his love for the legendary No.7, and many thought that he would stay at the club for decades and lead the rebuild to take United back to the top.
However, the Argentine looks set to leave the club and under poor circumstances. Even if he does stay at Old Trafford, he has a fractured relationship with the fans that will be difficult to mend.
