Manchester United have been linked with a potential deal to re-sign Angel Gomes on a free contract in the summer transfer window.
Ruben Amorim will be expecting a busy summer transfer window at Manchester United this summer and there are several priority positions already identified.
Players are also set to leave the club, with Christian Eriksen expected to depart for free while Casemiro’s future is also up in the air.
That likely means that United will need to strengthen in central midfield and Angel Gomes has been regularly linked with a return to the club to fill that gap.
Gomes, 24, departed Old Trafford in the summer of 2020 after coming through the Academy at a young age. He made his debut at 16 under Jose Mourinho, becoming the youngest player in over 60 years to play for the club.
However, after minimal opportunities under Ole Gunnar Solskjær, the young midfielder decided to leave the club at the end of his contract and join Lille.
Since then, Gomes has become an important player for the French side and is now being linked with a variety of clubs, including United and Tottenham Hotspur, as his contract once again comes towards its end.
United’s true stance on re-signing Gomes
Despite the rumours surrounding a potential return to Old Trafford, Graeme Bailey (via UnitedInFocus) has reported that United are currently not planning any move for the player.
It was explained that sources from within the club have played down the noise around a potential return to United for Gomes.
The report then suggested that Gomes’ role will have something to do with that, as the midfielder now operates slightly deeper and arguably does not fit the profile of player Amorim wants in his midfield pivot.
This also follows on from reports which claim that Gomes has snubbed a move to West Ham after the London-based club offered him a £100,000-a-week contract.
United could utilise free agent market
Perhaps Gomes does not fit the style Amorim wants perfectly, but United do need improved depth and they are not in the position to be throwing £30 million towards squad players.

Utilising the free agent market could end up being a smart move to bolster some areas of the squad while also keeping the transfer kitty for the priority additions.
The Academy can also be used for this, with someone like Sekou Kone a potential player who can come through and offer depth in the first-team squad.
It seems to make more sense to fill these gaps in this way rather than impacting how much United can spend on a centre-forward, for example, because they spent too much cash on a backup midfielder.
