Andre Onana addresses biggest Man United fan concern with smart answer
Andre Onana signed for Manchester United last week and is set to make his debut in a friendly against Real Madrid on Thursday.
The new shot-stopper was unable to feature in the 2-0 win against Arsenal but is expected to start against Los Blancos with many United fans excited for the game.
Onana will allow manager Erik ten Hag to adjust to his preferred play style more after being hamstrung by David de Gea’s ball-playing weaknesses last term.
However; whilst Onana has been a much-anticipated signing for many, there are still concerns that have been aired about the Cameroon goalkeeper.
The main worry is that the goalkeeper will make mistakes due to his ball-playing natures. Rather than kicking long or out of play when pressured, he will more than likely attempt to play through the press.
While that is exactly what United need, some fans are waiting to see whether he can assess these situations properly so he can minimise such mistakes.
That is exactly what the goalie plans on doing. Despite his ball-playing abilities, Onana has stressed the importance of analysing situations and ensuring he makes the best decision for different circumstances.
“I’m very comfortable playing from the back, but it depends,” he began, when talking to club media. “I think the most important thing is to recognise the situation and that’s what I do myself, read the situation, especially what the team needs in certain moments.
“When we play, depending on who we play, sometimes you have the possession and sometimes not, so from there you have to be smart and try to help the team, because most of the time playing with these players is amazing.”
Adaptation is crucial for every footballer; and that’s no different for ‘keepers. They must react to so many different situations.
Onana will bring a new lease of life to United in terms of passing but also the defensive line at Old Trafford.
He’s one of the best sweeper keepers in the world and that will allow the four in front to feel comfortable stepping several more yards up the field.
I look at myself as a modern goalkeeper, so I can adapt to any situation.”
However; he also explained how different game-states determine how he reacts in terms of sweeping.
“I think a lot of the time we will have possession. Sometimes I have to play higher and sometimes I have to drop,” he continued. “It’s just the moments and you have to recognise those moments and from there on, we look forward.”
