Alejandro Garnacho looks increasingly likely to sign a new contract at Manchester United after emerging as a first-team regular under Erik ten Hag this season.

The 18-year-old has scored two goals and assisted five times in 21 appearances so far this season. He has only started seven games, with Ten Hag utilising the winger as an impact substitute.

Garnacho signed a professional deal with the club in 2021 before entering the first-team scene. He impressed during United’s FA Youth Cup victory last term, which saw him make his debut for the first-team against Chelsea that season.

United have been keen to tie down the teenager on a long-term deal at the club, as well as improving his wage packet to acknowledge his development in the last year.

A recent report from Manu Sainz has said that the contract renewal is ‘practically completed’, with the image rights distribution the only remaining barrier.

It was added that both parties want to have a complete agreement in the coming days.

The length of the contract was also mentioned in the report, with both club and player said to be satisfied with a deal until June 2028.

The five-year deal might not be comparable to the recent contracts being supplied to Chelsea’s new signings, but it is a positive step for Ten Hag and the club.

Garnacho is currently competing with the in-form Marcus Rashford for minutes on the left-wing. Rashford picked up the Premier League Player of the Month award for January on Friday.

However, he’s proven his worth with several important performances coming from the bench; most notably scoring the winner against Fulham at Craven Cottage and assisting the winner against Manchester City at Old Trafford.

The aforementioned report also mentioned that United want Garnacho to be the image on which to build the club’s development in South America.
