Alejandro Garnacho’s prediction for Manchester United’s future captain has been echoed by supporters in recent weeks.

Garnacho, 19, has come through the academy to become a key member of Erik ten Hag’s United side this season. He has started the last 13 Premier League fixtures in a row.

The Argentine first made his name known with his FA Youth Cup final performance when United’s youth side won 3-1 against Nottingham Forest, with the winger bagging two goals.

Alongside Mainoo in that final was 16-year-old Kobbie Mainoo, who often ran the show for United’s Under-18s that season.

Two years on, Mainoo has joined Garnacho in the first team, with the English midfielder emerging as a consistent starter in Erik ten Hag’s set-up.

When United won 3-2 against Aston Villa in late December, before The Reds turned the game around, Mainoo was visibly pumping up the Old Trafford crowd when he was substituted.

Following the game, footage of the moment was uploaded to social media platform X, formally known as Twitter, with the caption: “Mainoo is our future captain.” Garnacho liked the tweet.

Since that tweet, Mainoo’s importance on the pitch has become even larger, and the teenager could even be called up for England duty next month.

However, he has also displayed great leadership in terms of his off-field presence, which has suggested that Garnacho’s prediction isn’t exactly far-fetched.

The midfielder has spoken with calmness and conviction in any post-match media he has done this season, and he also delivered a heart-warming message to a supporter who reached out to the club after he recently lost his father.

Mainoo’s class on and off the pitch has grabbed the attention of supporters, who believe he could wear the armband at Old Trafford in the future.

One fan posted on X, saying: “We must protect Kobbie Mainoo at all costs. He is literally everything we need at this club. Future captain.”

Another wrote: “Kobbie Mainoo should be going to the Euros and that is common knowledge at this point. 18 years old and may be our best midfielder on form, Future captain of England and United. Starboy.”

“This is Manchester United’s future captain. Kobbie Mainoo, ladies and gentlemen,” a third explained.
