Alejandro Garnacho could be struggling for a move away from Manchester United, as one club has dropped out of the race to sign the Argentine
Alejandro Garnacho was once considered the next big thing at Manchester United, after breaking through to the first team under Ralf Rangnick, but shining for Erik ten Hag the season after.
The Argentine often played in the Europa League alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, giving Marcus Rashford a break or seeing him move out to the right wing to make way for Garnacho.
United’s No.17 even scored the opening goal in the FA Cup final, effectively saving ten Hag’s job along with Kobbie Mainoo, who scored the second goal after a brilliant assist from Bruno Fernandes.
However, Garnacho now sees his future away from Old Trafford due to his comments made in the aftermath of United’s Europa League final loss to Tottenham Hotspur last season, where he openly criticised Rúben Amorim for choosing Mason Mount ahead of him.
At the end of July, Garnacho is now closer to a move away than he was at the start of the summer, despite being left out of the pre-season squad for the three fixtures in the USA.
Napoli drop out of Garnacho race
Garnacho was linked with a move away from United in January, due to the poor FFP situation, despite selling Scott McTominay in the summer prior.
Napoli were the most interested club at the time, and many thought they re-entered the race this summer, but Alfredo Pedulla has confirmed this isn’t the case.
The recent report states that no negotiations between Napoli and Garnacho have taken place since the January transfer window, despite reports from other organisations.
This comes despite Napoli boss Antonio Conte ‘personally demanding’ that his side sign the winger when they initially registered their interest back in January.
This could be because Garnacho prefers a move that would allow him to stay in the Premier League, with Aston Villa and Chelsea both expressing interest in the Argentine.
If a bid does not arrive soon, Amorim may have to consider a future where Garnacho remains at United and plays backup to Matheus Cunha on the left-hand side of attacking midfield.
Garnacho transfer could allow Sesko transfer
United have already spent over £120 million on Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, but remain in the hunt for a striker, midfielder and potentially a goalkeeper if Altay Bayindir or Andre Onana leaves.
While Rashford has left the club, United are yet to raise any transfer funds of their own accord, only making money from former players’ sell-on clauses as they make a new move.
Selling Antony, Tyrell Malacia, and Jadon Sancho will raise funds, but they will not compare to what the Red Devils will want to sell Garnacho for if he does eventually leave the club; he alone could make money for the club than the other three players.
The funds that Garnacho would raise could be spent on a new centre forward, with United currently deciding between Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.
